necropolises of stećak tombstones
About necropolises of stećak tombstones:
According to written data, there were about 350 stećak tombstones in the Živinice area before the urbanization process.
The stećak tombstones were erected in the second half of the 12th century and were erected on the graves of deceased rulers, nobles and rich landowners, and less on the graves of the poor.
They rise until the 16th century when they die out.
The area of Živinice is a monument of cultural heritage, in addition to the stećak tombstones, there are also several medieval fortifications "gradine", the most famous of which are:
Gradina in Nevrenča, “Grda Jasičak above Bašigovac”, Džebarska gradina, Grad “Čaršija” above Gornja Višća and Djedinska gradina. These sites have not yet been fully explored.
According to written data by Miladin Pelemiš and Boško Kićanović from 1988, 266 stećak tombstones have been preserved in the area of Živinice, among which the necropolis “Vrpolje” in Đurđevik stands out, “Trijebnik” also in Đurđevik and the site “Carska bašča” in Panjik near Šahić, and from the "singles" stands out a stećak called "stetac" above Kršić, a lonely sarcophagus in Musići not far from the mosque, a stećak "bench" at the prayer house in Brnjica, etc.
Of special value for historiography is a stećak from the necropolis "Vrpolje" because it is decorated in the image of a horse with a horseman, and the written text on the stećak with even greater value, which is also the only stećak with written text in Živinice.
The text was first discovered by Ćiro Truhelka in 1895, and a little later by Stojan Novaković and Marko Vego. The text reads:
"STOJAN UTOLOVIĆ is lying on his land on the noble Ostoja's brother."
The text is engraved (written) in Old Bosnian Cyrillic "Bosančica".
According to the written sources of the above-mentioned authors from 1988, the necropolises of the stećak tombstones were located at the following sites, although most of the stećak tombstones were moved from their original location to the site near Paradise Lake Bašigovci, with several locations from the area of the City of Zivinice.
